Become a Umpire: New Umpire Development Course
If you’re interested in becoming a baseball umpire, our New Umpire Development Course is the perfect place to start. This comprehensive 4-week program, hosted at DBat in Tigard, provides you with all the essential knowledge and skills to confidently officiate at the lower levels of baseball.
The course is designed for individuals new to umpiring and covers everything you need to know to get started. Over the course of four weeks, you’ll be introduced to the rules of baseball, learn the critical mechanics of umpiring, and gain practical experience.
Baseball Rules: A solid foundation in the key rules and regulations of baseball.
Umpire Mechanics: Learn the essential on-field positioning, signaling, and decision-making skills necessary to officiate effectively.
Game Management: Understand how to manage a game, including handling player and coach interactions, enforcing rules, and ensuring a safe environment for everyone involved.
The highlight of the course is the on-field mechanics clinic held during the weekend of the 4th class. This live, hands-on clinic allows you to practice the skills you've learned in real game situations under the guidance of experienced umpires.
Part of the course includes guidance on how to acquire umpire gear and uniforms. We provide valuable resources to help you get the right equipment, ensuring you’re fully prepared to step onto the field.
Upon completion of the course, you will have the skills and knowledge needed to umpire at the lower levels of JBO and recreational baseball games. This course sets the foundation for your umpire career, offering both the technical expertise and the practical experience required to succeed in the field.
